RID Program Team Members Featured on Three Recent Podcasts!

RID Program PhD student Zahra Pakzad and Investigator Dr. Deborah Money have recently been featured as guests on three notable podcasts!

Zahra was a featured guest on the 131st episode of the Raw Talk Podcast, which is a graduate student-run podcast based out of the University of Toronto that focuses on discussing the latest in medical science findings with distinguished trainees, community members, and professionals in the field. The episode that Zahra was featured on was entitled “A Strong Start: Microbiome Milestones in Early Life”, and had an overall theme of discussing the human gut microbiome, with a particular focus on the development of this microbiome in newborns and infants. During the episode, Zahra discussed findings of the RID Program’s Maternal Microbiome Legacy Project regarding the lack of impact of birth mode on infant gut microbiome development, and helped to dispel some common misconceptions regarding this topic.

Dr. Money was a featured guest on The DOSE with Dr. Brian Goldman, which is a weekly podcast created by CBC that features discussions on the latest in health research findings with experts in the field, in a plain-language format. Dr. Money was featured on the episode entitled “What do I need to know about HPV and the HPV vaccine?”. During the episode, Dr. Money provided a brief background on the transmission, prevalence, and symptoms of HPV, as well as information on its connection to cervical and other types of cancer. Dr. Money also described the current HPV/cervical cancer testing practices in Canada, the importance of HPV vaccination and its high efficacy in cancer prevention. Finally, Dr. Money also addressed the hesitancy and misinformation that has been spread on the internet regarding the vaccine, and helped to dispel many of the myths that are often circulated regarding the vaccine. Overall, she advocated for greater uptake of the vaccine in the Canadian population due to its impressive ability to prevent multiple types of cancer.

Dr. Money was also recently featured in the BC Today Podcast, which is a daily podcast created by CBC and hosted by Michelle Eliot that discusses key stories and issues occurring in British Columbia with experts and members of the community. Dr. Money was featured on an episode entitled “Miscarriage care”, where she discussed the new miscarriage care guidelines that were recently released by The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC). She described what the changes to the guidelines are, and how these changes can help to improve the care of pregnant women and people going through miscarriage in BC.
