A new publication authored by multiple members of the RID Program team including Dr. Jeffrey Wong, Dr. Julie van Schalkwyk, Dr. Laura Sauvé, Dr. Deborah Money, Arezou Azampanah, and Dr. Chelsea Elwood has been recently published in the International Journal of STD & AIDS! This publication entitled “Sexually transmitted infections and bacterial vaginosis and preterm birth in pregnant people living with HIV: A population-based cohort study“, describes results from a population-based cohort study using patient data from the British Columbia Perinatal HIV Surveillance Database. This study analyzed the data of pregnant people living with HIV, with a specific focus on those who delivered preterm and if there is an association with preterm birth and antenatal sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and/or bacterial vaginosis (BV). The preterm birth rate in women and pregnant people living with HIV that had antenatal STIs/BV was found to be over double the preterm birth rate in pregnant women and people with HIV that did not have an antenatal STI/BV. Additionally, the sexually transmitted infections with the highest risk of preterm birth were found to be hepatitis C, chlamydia, trichomonas and bacterial vaginosis.
