Two new publications, from a global group of esteemed clinician scientists, including RID Program Leader Dr. Deborah Money and frequent collaborator Dr. Isabelle Boucoiran have recently been published in the International Journal of Gynecology & Obstetrics!
The first of these publications, entitled “Reducing post-cesarean sepsis: Current best practice in prevention and treatment” was authored by the members of the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) Committee on Infections in Pregnancy, which includes both Dr. Money and Dr. Boucoiran. The publication provides both care provider guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of sepsis following a cesarean section (CS) as well as a general background on the condition. This publication was written in response to the rising CS rates around the world and the correlated increases in post-CS sepsis, with the current global incidence of post-CS sepsis being approximately 7%. Overall, the publication will help care providers to recognize sepsis earlier in the postpartum period, which can aid in faster treatment and reduced risk of disease escalation/adverse outcomes.
The second publication, entitled “Syphilis in pregnancy: A practical guide for prenatal care providers” was authored by a group of members of the FIGO Committee on Infections During Pregnancy and FIGO Committee on Health Systems Strengthening, which included Dr. Money and Dr. Boucoiran. This publication features a background on syphilis, the current rise of syphilis cases in pregnancy around the world, as well as suggested guidelines for prenatal care providers on how to care for syphilis in pregnancy and prevent vertical transmission to infants. Through the implementation of these guidelines, care providers can help to diagnose and treat syphilis in pregnancy earlier, and help to lower the risk of infants developing congenital syphilis.
